Emerging technology- powering 'electronics' with your voice/ any other sounds

South Korean electrical engineers are developing a technology that could recharge your phone battery with the sound of your voice. Dr. Sang-Woo Kim and his associates at Sungkyunkwan University's Institute of Nanotechnology in Seoul are determined to convert energy from speech, music and other background noises into electrical power.

The technology works by placing a sound-absorbing pad on strands of zinc oxide that are sandwiched between two electrodes. Sound transferred through the pad causes the zinc oxide wires to compress and release, creating an electrical current. An existing prototype can generate about 50 millivolts of electricity from 100 decibels of sound. But, they are still hopeful about refining this technology, as they are planning to use materials other than zinc oxide which can produce more voltage with less sound.

They also have put forth the idea of placing sound-insulating walls near roads that could generate electricity from the sound of passing vehicles. It would also protect homes and offices against noise due to the passing traffic of vehicles.

If this technology is refined soon, we may hope to use them to record conferences or interactive technical sessions on tablets/ cell-phones/ laptops without needing chargers continuously plugged-in for charging.

Active music listeners too need not worry about charging their batteries at all.

During auspicious ceremonies (Specially in our country), there will be lot of pomp and shows. There will be music, and lot of noise too. That can be used in lightings and powering up of cell-phones too.

So, lets hope this technology and other similar technologies will be refined and developed very soon. Also, lets contribute our ideas and if possible, work on such ideas as they can contribute a lot for energy sector, if considered over a large span of time.
